A regional diagnostic reference laboratory with outreach across the North East territory of the US with an annual testing average of over 10 million.


This regional laboratory needed a better and cost-effective solution to replace antiquated problematic specimen scanning devices used by their drivers. They also implemented a mobile app to manage the logistics of both samples and supplies. They engaged with ISM to identify a low-cost, more innovative solution that would ensure accuracy and efficiency in the logistical process.


The regional lab wanted to ensure the accuracy of lab test tracking, from the point of supply drop-off and specimen collection to updating patient records with results. Their current logistical process included bulky, handheld scanners that were now obsolete with limited functionality that was no longer supported by the manufacturer. With a growing device failure rate, drivers and the operations team had to manually input data on specimens and supply delivery which failed to scan. This was increasing the potential for errors and negatively impacting turnaround time. The operations team determined that replacing these with similar devices would be too costly.


After reviewing current processes and identifying the regional labs specific logistical needs, ISM built an intuitive mobile-based app to improve accuracy and efficiency in the process. The smart, simple apps were installed on driver mobile phones enabling faster scanning and smarter processes. Drivers could choose between using their own mobile phones or company issued phones. In addition to more accurately scanning and managing the logistics of supply drop-off and specimen collection, the app included a GPS to determine optimized routes and divert drivers when traffic problems are detected. The app enabled synchronizes data in real time so the operations team could better plan around the anticipated delivery schedule and follow all their drivers in route via an admin panel. Administrators were able to visualize the progress of drop-off and pickup status for each driver. In addition, the logistical system was integrated within the enterprise laboratory information system.


Within one year, the regional laboratory was able to see a full return on investment for their upgraded scanning and logistics program.
